THE LATVIAN RHEUMATICS ASSOCIATION
The Association is established on May 8th 1998 An inquiry for patients are prepared and now we have started to provide the date bases for patients with bone, joints and tissue's diseases.
The Board of organisation and initiative group participated in several educational seminars and worked out the strategic plan for educational programmes for patients and their families.
The physicians popularise the Rheumatic Associations at hospitals ambulances and other medical or educational institutions and registers new members.

The main aims

To acknowledge and summarize the patients of bone, joints and conjunctive tissues' diseases, to form the unified registration system in order to unite the patients, physicians and other interested persons in the public organisation;
To help the patients of bone, joints and conjunctive tissues' diseases to integrate in society, to raise their self confidence and to be active;
To change the philosophy of the State's institutions that handicapped people have to have possibilities to improve their lives by themselves and they need assistance not only by allowances but by providing new working places, changing the policy of taxes, social security and care.

      

Our work

Provide various informative and educational materials about the RA, different groups of diseases, methods for treatment as well as social guidance.
Implement throughout the country the educational programmes developed by health professionals for patients, their families and RA members on different subjects such as rheumatic diseases its treatment at the hospitals or rehabilitation centres.
Develop the databases registering the RA members and identifying other rheumatism patients in order to summarise the statistic figures for better understanding and analysis of the real situation in Latvia.
Issue a handbook for handicapped people encouraging to organise their life in better quality and to help themselves.
Organise the seminars useful both for physicians and patients working together at the problem, for example morning stiffness or quick tiredness where physician's advice and patient's experience help to understand the phenomenon and to adapt to the illness.

Within two years the LRA has established nine regional departments, sub-department for children and youth with rheumatic diseases and osteoporosis sub-department. Until now the Association unites more than 400 members from which about one fourth are children and young people.
